I tested the game for a goal of 70+ FPS at 1080p. The game performed quite well in the above settings. I will cover the details in the next section. I recorded the video of a small gameplay snippet with the above settings. Check it out: [LINK]
Results and Conclusion
As I tested the game out, the optimization was quite well for most parts. During the village building section, the camera movement was causing some FPS drops.
They were not significant. The reason for this can be the loading of new areas for you and the game render speed as well.
For entry-level systems, this can be an issue. If you are running a 1050TI and I3 or i5 8th or 10th gen, lower the settings to your comfort. I would not recommend that you go above medium for such systems.
Recorded Average FPS | Recorded Ram usage |
115 FPS | 4.5GB |
As you can see, I was getting an average of 115FPS with the above settings. The RAM usage hovered around 4.5 to 5GB at max.
This is decent considering the amount of upgrades they have done from the previous Age of Empires title. Having that said, I feel like the game does require a bit more optimization.
Especially in the camera panning and adjustment section. Sometimes the movement of the camera is off, and sometimes it causes FPS drops, even when there are no extra graphical textures.
I hope the developers look into this if they can. Other than that, if you enjoy playing Real-Time Strats, this is a very good game!
Performance Guide
There are a couple of other tips here that I would like to share. These are not necessarily game-specific, but they can help you to run Age of Empires 4 properly. This can also help you get that extra ounce of performance and FPS that you may have needed. The first on the list is:
Updating Graphics Drivers
This is a simple and universal fix to update graphics drivers for your card. I would not have listed this performance fix, but NVIDIA specifically released their latest driver update that contains some performance enhancements to Age of Empires 4 and other games.
Settings Windows to Performance Mode
A very self-explanatory fix for most performance-related problems. Windows takes up a lot of resources to run these. If you are running into the issue of less RAM or Card Memory, this can help you a lot.
Go to Appearance settings for Windows, and select the options that say optimize for performance. This will help you in improving a medium number of FPS.
Turning off overlays and Anti-Virus
These are also very basic fixes that you need to do for most games. I have realized that a lot of PC, as well as laptop players, would like to play this game in their leisure time.
If that is the case, You should turn off almost all Platform overlays like Origin, Steam, Uplay, and in this case XBOX App Overlay.
This includes the game bar. Anti-Virus is also a hurdle hence you should ideally make an exception for Age of Empires 4 or Turn it off while you play the game.
The Anti-Virus is infamous for recognizing these executables as threats which they are not!
That is all I am sharing in this post for the best PC settings for Age of Empires 4. I hope the settings as well as the performance guide have helped you in some way or the other.
