Our candy heart drawing starts the same as our curved heart drawing – with two slightly overlapping circles of the same size.

Since we want to be able to add some thickness to our candy heart drawing, we will draw the two circles at an angle.

Draw two slightly curved lines that meet in a tip to complete the heart drawing.

Now, this is a third way to draw a heart – our simple heart was drawn from just two straight lines, while the fancy curved heart was twisted to one side.

Next, let’s draw another candy heart, exactly the same way, just at a different angle.

Again, draw two overlapping circles, and add the curved sides meeting in a pointy tip.

Here comes the trick on how to turn the flat heart drawing into a three-dimensional candy heart with some thickness.

Let’s start simply by adding some short lines. These will mark how thick the candy heart will be – so make all the lines the same length.

Draw one line at the tip of each heart. Then add another line at the outermost point of the heart circle – the leftmost on the heart tilted left, the rightmost on the one tilted right.

It is a mouthful to explain, but easy if you look at the picture.

Now let’s complete the candy heart drawing by adding the bottom edges to each heart.

The lower sides are easy – simply join the bottom ends of our short side lines with an arc that copies the shape of the heart.

For the upper edge sides, smoothly join the heart tip to the sideline.

With the sketch done, it is time to outline our drawing. You can use our usual black ink fineliner. But for a sweeter, softer look, try drawing the outline with a colored pencil – check the difference between the two colored variations at the end of the tutorial.

Start by drawing out the top heart shape. Follow the sketch lines, with the only small improvement being rounding off the very tip of the heart.

After all, candy hearts have slightly rounded edges.

Similarly to the step above, use the sketch line to outline the bottom edges of the candy hearts.

Again, notice the slightly curved corners at the tip and on the sides, where the sketch was sharp.

Quite often, conversational candy hearts come with a short message of love.

So let’s add that in now. Here we have the most common “Love you” and “Hug me”, but feel free to adore your drawing with one of the many other sayings.

The very last small detail is to add three short curved lines to mark the rounded edge at the tip of the candy heart, as there is no sharp edge there anymore.

And here is the finished candy heart drawing, once we have erased the sketch lines.

That was a pretty easy drawing, wasn’t it?

Our usual last step is to color in the drawing. Now, candy hearts can come in many colors, but here we are going for the two classic ones. The red and pink are just perfect for the upcoming Valentine’s day.

Color the top of the hearts with a clean color. Then fill in the sides with a darker shade of red or pink.

Notice how we are leaving out some white highlights, to give the candy hearts a more 3D look.

Here is a simple color variation.

It is exactly the same drawing, except we have outlined the drawing with a colored pencil, rather than a black ink fineliner.

The result is a much softer and cuter candy heart drawing, just perfect for your Valentine’s day card!
